The importance and Benefits of exfoliating your skin

When it comes to skin care we hear so much about cleansing and moisturizing, but we don’t often hear about exfoliating it’s important as well, and how often should we do it.

Starting from the basics; exfoliation means is removing the death cells of the skin´s surfaces. There many ways to exfoliate: mechanically, with chemicals or with natural scrubs than can be made at home.

Removing dead cells its important because they can accumulate on the surface of the skin causing clogged pores that can lead to excess produce of oils, and acne; also, the skin starts looking dull and rough.

The exfoliations will help unclogged pores, uncover new fresh skin, opens the pores for the moisturizer products to penetrate deeply on the sin making them more effective. Also exfoliating improves the blood circulation on the area.

After this brief explanation you are probably wandering What’s the best way to exfoliate your skin?

That will depend on your skin complexion, skin health, the sensitivity of your skin if you have acne, and according to your skin type.  The best way to know what´s the best exfoliating system is to consult a professional specially if your planning on using a chemical exfoliation.  But if you’re not and you rather do it at home you can use 2 types of exfoliates.

Note that when I talk about chemical exfoliation I refer to peelings and mask. This means, that the very top layer of your skin will be removed chemically and if is not made by a professional can cause damage to your skin.

Store Scrubs: there are many different types of scrubs that you can find on beauty supply stores just choose one that has smooth and ground granules.

Homemade scrubs: you can make a natural scrub at home with sugar, sea salt, coffee, and oils. I personally don’t recommend using a salt scrub because the salt can be harsh for the skin and can cause irritation, but some people like it; I prefer brown sugar or coffee, do it once a week.

Alternative exfoliation: if you don’t want to use a scrub, you can exfoliate with a loofah, you are taking a shower and exfoliating at the same time. Just don’t use it every single day, use it every other day.

After exfoliating it’s really important to take good care of your skin to avoid any irritations and skin damage.

After exfoliating the first and most important thing to do is to moisturize the skin to hydrate it.

Do not expose your skin to UV rays for at least 24 hours.

Don’t shave or wax after the exfoliations, wait 24 to 48 hours to do it, you want to avoid rubbing or be harsh on your skin, because its sensitive after the exfoliation

If you want to have healthy fresh-looking skin, do your exfoliation routine once or twice a week depending on your method; don’t forget to exfoliate face, body, lips and feet; if you decide to use a homemade scrub you can use the same on for all your body; and always ask a professional before using any chemicals.

What´s your exfoliation routine and how often do you do it?
